Description
A class in the Hall of Sculpture of the Carnegie Museum of Art was taken as part of the Pittsburgh Portrait Show traveling exhibit in 1951. The Hall of Sculpture, which opened in 1907, was modeled after the cella, or inner sanctuary of the Greek Parthenon. It was even constructed of marble from the same Greek quarries. The hall was originally built to house the museum’s collection of Near Eastern, Greek, and Roman Sculptures. The balcony, which was built to provide patrons with a view from the second floor, is currently reserved for decorative arts objects including glass, ceramics, and metalwork. Several items from Andrew Carnegie’s personal cast collection are displayed in the Hall of Sculpture on pedestals around the balcony. There is also a reproduction of the carved frieze (pictured here) on the Parthenon’s cella bellow, the skylight depicting the inauguration of Athena’s annual festival. Currently the Hall of Sculpture houses permanent, as well as special exhibits.
